A Different World for School Nurses
I found a recent article from CNN really interesting…..and a bit scary. I don’t think that many people really think about medical care that may be delivered to their children at schools. You don’t think about it until you need it, right?!
School nurses are in much demand, but there are less resources for it and fewer and fewer nurses trained for this type of work. It used to be that school nurses took care of the bruised knee or the bloody nose or the child with a low grade fever that just threw up in the cafeteria….but now they are dealing with severe allergies and emergency management and complex medical children in wheelchairs and seizure disorders and sometimes even ventilators or full urinary/bowel assistance. It’s a different world. At BrightStar we have been able to help many local school communities through providing temporary school nurses or even setting up one-on-one nursing for those very complex children, all in the name of helping each child get a full education. We’re proud of that, and we love working with these dedicated educators and grateful families….but I bet most of you never even thought much about the school nurse!
