A Daughter’s Journey: Circle of Friends
Posted on May 24th, 20175/24/17 |
Call me lazy, but I’ve found most of my friends through proximity.
As a kid, I rode bikes and ran through sprinklers with kids in my neighborhood. At school, my friends had similar interests, or at least similar last names: Our high school lockers were assigned alphabetically. In college, I became friends with girls living in my dorm.
Many of these friendships have carried over into adulthood, and I appreciate their longevity. These women honestly want to know how my dad is doing—and how I’m holding up. These friends know me all too well to accept the stock replies I feed to others: He’s fine. I’m fine. Everything’s progressing nicely. Thank you for asking.
The more I talk to my friends, telling my stories and hearing theirs, the more I realize the universality of the human experience.
I don’t just mean how we all feel fear, love, hope, and joy. I mean, literally, that my kid had lice, and so did yours. I mean that my dad fell in the driveway, and so did yours. I mean that my mom yells at me when she’s scared, and so does yours.
Whether it’s a drawn-out conversation while sipping coffee or a quick text between errands, my friends let me know they care. They provide distractions in the best way possible. They laugh with me at the absurd things in life, share recipes, and recommend good books.
We’ve faced down marriages and divorces, miscarriages and adoptions, even promotions and layoffs. We’ve laughed together on vacation and cried together at parent’s funerals. If friends are the family we choose, I was in the right place at the right time.
