About the Owners

Nancy and Michael Walton first became active in community healthcare while living in Montgomery, Alabama. They approached the state government with an idea to develop free or low-cost clinics in rural areas, where medical professionals are sorely needed. Getting through all of the government red tape was a huge task in itself, and the idea never came to fruition.

In the meantime, Nancy’s 83-year-young mother underwent a series of surgeries. After many months, she was released from a local hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, and assigned to a skilled nursing facility.

When Medicare ran out, Nancy’s mom was forced to return home on her own, but she still needed assistance. The family managed to find some homecare help, and they were glad to see she was happier living in her own home.

After a lot of research comparing various in-home companies, the Waltons came across BrightStar. The company helping Nancy’s mom did an adequate job, but it didn’t compare to the level of skilled care and the quality offered by BrightStar.

The Waltons recognized an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the community, and they jumped at the chance, opening their own BrightStar office in May of 2009. The experience is just as rewarding as they hoped it would be.

Michael is a member of the Norfolk Hospice Alliance and the Task Forces on Aging in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Portsmouth.

Michael and Nancy both attended Virginia Tech and both enjoy running to stay fit. They have two wonderful children, Stephen, a student at Auburn University, and Stacey, a solid soccer and volleyball player.
