Local owners Bob and Heidi Partain had just celebrated the birth of their first daughter when they received some difficult news.

After a long and illustrious career as a neurosurgeon in San Antonio, Texas, Bob’s dad was himself diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a long-term neurological disorder he had once treated in his patients.

“We were shocked and unprepared to say the least,” Bob says.

Bob’s mom served as his dad’s primary caregiver for several years. Eventually, the family needed some help, but they were definitely not interested in moving Dad into a care facility.

“I made numerous calls and several personal visits to Texas to help arrange for in-home healthcare for my father. It was much harder than I expected,” Bob says. “Finding caregivers that we trusted to look after my parents in their own home was a complicated task, mainly because it was difficult to find an agency that seemed to truly care about the situation.”

Their personal experience inspired Bob and Heidi to open BrightStar of Hartford.

“Our situation is not unique,” Bob says. “Families reach points in their lives where they need some compassionate and skilled help from outside of their own immediate circle. We want to be the source of that help.”
