Earlier this week, we posted a blog about the Determinators, an impressive group of young inventors who made The EZ Inflatable, a device to help get seniors out of chairs. The idea to create this ingenious device came from acknowledging that seniors can experience challenges with some activities of daily living: standing from a sit-down position, climbing stairs or even vacuuming or doing household chores. We’d like to introduce you to a group of eight clever 11-13 year-old inventors from Atlanta who created an ingenious device that makes it easier for seniors to get out of chairs. “The Determinators” as they’re called, is a FIRST LEGO League Team. As part of these teams, kids work together to solve real-life problems, design cool robots that accomplish certain tasks, and compete against other teams. According to the American Heart Association, if Americans cut their average sodium intake by more than half, to an average of 1,500 milligrams per day, there would be a nearly 26 percent decrease in high blood pressure and a savings of more than $26 billion in healthcare costs in just one year. The AHA recommends foods with little or no salt to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It suggests eating less than 1,500 mg of sodium per day. (more…)

As an elder care consideration, staying in good general health as a senior is important. The elderly can be more susceptible to disease and health problems than younger people. An especially debilitating disease is age-related macular degeneration, often called AMD or ARMD. It’s the leading cause of vision and blindness among Americans ages 65 or older. (more…)
