Finding Love Later In Life in Boise

February 10, 2020

What does falling in love look like when you're older?

Some say "You're never too old to fall in love" but many resist it all together.

Despite the resistors, the facts show that more seniors are finding love later in life than ever before This is likely due to the increasing life expectancy of seniors. "Entering into a new relationship later in life gives seniors the chance to experience love and happiness once again, especially after the loss of a partner."

"According to data from the Social Security Administration, if a man reaches the age of 65 today he can expect to live until about 84. A woman who turns 65 today will live, on average, until almost 87.

"A 2014 Pew Research Center notes that remarriage among divorced or widowed adults ages 55 and over is on the rise. In 2013, two-thirds (67%) of previously married adults ages 55 to 64 had remarried, up from 55% in 1960. And 50% of adults ages 65 and older had remarried, up from just 34% in 1960.

Love is different for people as they get older. For a number of reasons, some older couples are choosing to live together, rather than marry. In a 2017 report, Pew Research Center states, 4% of adults 50 and over are cohabitating. The majority (57%) of these couples are in their 50s. About 30% of older adults living together are in their 60s, 10% are in their 70s, and 3% are in their 80s."

If you're a single senior, you're in good company!  There are many barriors to love later in life.  A Place for Mom lists shows us just how hard it is:

"Biological, demographic and psychological factors can all make it challenging for seniors to form romantic relationships:"
  • Older men often develop a sense of inferiority because they are less virile compared to their younger selves.
  • Older women often come to see themselves as unattractive because of society’s worship of youth.
  • The older men who are eligible often seek younger wives. It is common for older men to start a new family rather than pairing up with someone their own age.
  • Women live eight years longer than men. This means that there are many lonely widowed women whose prospects of finding another partner are slim. For instance, at assisted living communities there is an average of seven women for each man.
We all have high hopes for love and it is a rare and wonderful gift.  Luckily, those without a partner on Valentine's day can find family, companions and friendships to love.

We wish you all a very Happy Valentine's Day!
