Caregiving for Boulder Seniors: Caring For Yourself While Caring For Them

Boulder/Broomfield Senior Caregiving - Care For Them and You

Caregiving When you are a caregiver, something very special can happen. Your outlook on life is different, as you are now seeing the world through the eyes of your Boulder/Broomfield senior loved one who is battling cancer. Another benefit to becoming a caregiver for a loved one is that your relationship with them can be strengthened. Not to say that being a caregiver won’t be stressful and full of hardships, it is somewhat of a full-time job, but there are sweet moments to it that you would not experience with your loved one otherwise. Just remember in those tough moments, to take care of yourself as well as your senior. While it is important to keep your loved one’s needs at the forefront, do not let your own needs and well-being go to the wayside. By taking care of yourself at the same time, the experience of caring for your loved one will be easier.

Specific ways that caregivers tend to forget about themselves is in their own health. They are so focused on making sure their loved ones are eating right and exercising, that they do not not do that themselves. Just a reminder. If your own health is failing, your ability to help your loved one to the fullest extent will be compromised and you both end up suffering in the end. To help you keep up on your own health, here are some tips to keep a personal routine going in the midst of caregiving:

   1) Staying active: Keeping a routine of at least 30 minutes of exercise a day such as jogging, running, or biking will help you to keep your energy level up, and maintain recommended cardio.

   2) Watch your eating habits: When we are constantly on the go, we tend to grab whatever food is most convenient to grab and go. Keep a healthy balance of fruits and vegetables, and protein. Not only is this healthy for your body, but maintaining these healthy eating habits will also help boost your energy level.

   3) Sleep: Caregiving for your Boulder/Broomfield senior will not only be physically taxing, but emotionally as well. This can cause you to become more easily and more often tired, so try to keep your sleeping regimen of 6-8 hours a night and nap when you feel the need and are able to. If you are not able to nap, take time to at least rest and remember to breathe. Stretch and meditate if time and location permits.
