Caregiving for Boulder/Broomfield Seniors: Caring for Yourself While Caring for Them

Boulder/Broomfield Senior Caregiving - Care for Them and You

Emotional stability is just as important as physical/health stability. Becoming a caregiver to a Boulder/Broomfiel senior loved one will require a large amount of emotional stamina. As a result, it is very important that you as the caregiver receive emotional support from others as you are giving emotional support to your loved one. Supporting a senior loved one suffering from cancer is a very emotional experience. You are not only going through the emotions your loved one is going through as they learn to live with their diagnosis, but you as the caregiver will experience a rollercoaster of emotions on your own as well. Do not panic and feel like you are crazy and the only one going through a wave of emotions. This is normal, and everyone in your position will go through it. Your initial reaction may be to stuff down your feelings and emotions, but stop and let yourself experience it. The emotions will never fully go away, so to maintain healthy emotional health, take a look at some of these tips.

   1) Talk: It is quite common for caregivers to feel isolated in their emotions. This isolation can quite quickly escalate and become overwhelming. Talking to a professional may help more than talking to family or friends. In a professional setting, you may feel more at ease to express your fears and struggles about caring for your Boulder/Broomfiel senior.

   2) Take “me” time: If your schedule permits, carve out some time for yourself. between the “busyness” of life and being caregiver, you may find that you are never alone. Whether it be five minutes, or an hour, rearrange your schedule so that you have some down and alone time to decompress and rejuvenate yourself.

   3) Just say no: Prioritize your responsibilities and schedule, and learn how to say no when people ask you to do things that are not of high importance. There are only 24 hours in a day, and you don’t have to do everything yourself.
