Boulder's LGBTQ Seniors are Important to our Commuity

September 24, 2019

Boulder Has a Long History of Being at the Forefront of Protecting the Rights of Residents Who Identify as Members of the LGBTQ Community.

Boulder has been recognized in a 2019 report by SeniorAdvice, which ranked the city among the top 20 areas in the US  for members of the community to retire.

The report released by SeniorAdvice used several metrics to determine Boulder’s 12th place spot, including the city’s score on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index, which looks at how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are for LGBTQ people in communities where they live and work (Boulder’s score was 92 on the 2018 Municipal Equality Index), and the presence of an LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce.

The report states, “The county of Boulder was second in the nation to grant same-sex marriage licenses. In 1974, Boulder became the first city in the state to offer municipal protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and years later, protecting gender identity. About a decade ago, these LGBTQ protections were extended to employment, housing and public accommodation.”

Retiree Scott Beard and his husband, Fintan Steele, moved to Boulder from Boston in 2010.  “Boulder is beautiful. It’s very inclusive,” said Beard, a trust attorney who recently helped establish the Boulder County LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce. “Our long-term goal was to retire here.”  “Our love for Boulder is among the things we have in common.”  READ MORE HERE:  https://www.dailycamera.com/2019/08/24/boulder-among-top-spots-for-lgbtq-retirees/

Local LGBTQ residents and advocates mostly agree with the report, but also cited some difficulties retirees might face in Boulder. The US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health identifies ageism and heterosexism as themes that negatively impact access to healthcare, housing, social support, home assistance, and legal services for LGBTQ seniors. Resilience from weathering a lifetime of discrimination was also identified as a strength LGBTQ seniors possess to help handle aging challenges.
