Caregiver Judy Erslon Helps USA Cares

November 9, 2017
Judy Erslon
Judy Erslon, a caregiver at BrightStar Care of Central St. Louis County, MO, is helping to raise awareness of and funds for the USA Cares Honor Glow, a fundraiser to assist military families that are in crisis. The event takes place on Sunday, December 3, from 5-7 p.m. at the Thomas Sappington House Museum, 1015 S. Sappington Road, Crestwood, MO. There will also be an Honor Glow on Sunday, December 3, from 5-7 p.m. at West City Park, 2232-2292 Old State Hwy. A, in Festus, MO.

“The importance of the Honor Glow activity is so younger generations will have a respect for our soldiers and for their families. All gave some and some gave all,” said Erslon, who has been involved with the Honor Glow for four years and volunteering and serving as local chapter board member for USA Cares since 2013. “When my brother came home from Vietnam people would spit when they saw him, and it broke my heart. My father served in World War II, most of my uncles did as well, and my grandfather served in World War I. We had a sense of pride knowing that our family has a patriotic sense of responsibility to our great nation.”

In an effort to bring back that sense of reverence for the sacrifices made by our military, USA Cares, which exists to help bear the burdens of service by providing post-9/11 active duty military personnel, veterans and their families with financial and advocacy support in their time of need, holds its annual Honor Glow. It is an evening of luminaries and lights in honor of veterans, past and present.

Grant’s Trail on the Great Rivers Greenway will light up with luminaries in honor of veterans. The event also includes bonfires, music, pictures with Santa, treats and hot chocolate with the 620th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and Crestwood Fire Department. Additionally, a veteran bugler will play reveille, a veteran will sing the national anthem, soldiers will complete a flag folding while the bugler plays taps and the flag will be presented to a local veteran. All proceeds from Honor Glow will benefit USA Cares and its mission to assist military families in crisis.
