Medicare Home Care vs. Private Duty Home Care

November 12, 2019
The big difference between Medicare Home Health and Private Duty Home Care is Medicare pays for Home Health and the patient generally pays for Home Care.

Why would anyone pay for Home Care services?

The primary reason is that the patient controls their Home Care.  Medicare Home Health requires a doctor’s orders and is very specific in its scope and duration. Private Duty Home Care is limited only by a patient’s wishes and ability to pay.  If a patient needs ongoing care, fall prevention, meal preparation, med reminders, transportation, housekeeping, companionship and other services to maintain health and independence, Home Care is often their only option.

Medical professionals can overlook the Home Care option for several reasons:
  • The patient is usually referred to Rehab.  Rehab is a great alternative if the patient has significant medical needs AND is receptive to Rehab.  Some patients would rather be at home and will have a more positive attitude and recover more effectively in the comfort of their own home environment.  This can also reduce hospital readmissions.
  • Assuming patients won’t afford the cost.  Home care can be quite affordable and tailored to improve the patient’s quality of life.  In certain situations family members can and will pay for home care even if the patient themselves can’t afford it.  This both takes the burden off of the family members and can significantly improve the patient’s quality of care.
