Does Osteoporosis Have Symptoms?

bigstock-Osteoporosis-44323384.jpgOsteoporosis is a condition in which bone mass is reduced and the bones become weak and brittle. This condition can be mild, but it can also be severe, leading to increased risk of falls and other accidents as well as increased risk of serious fractures. Osteoporosis is often considered a "silent" risk because the first indication that a person has that they are suffering from the condition is experiencing a fracture. There are, however, a few symptoms that your parent might exhibit that could indicate that they are living with this condition.

These symptoms include:

  • Exhibiting a stooped posture when sitting or standing, which could indicate weakness in the bones and joints that support the body in these positions.
  • Pain in the back that might be caused by collapsed or fractured vertebrae in the back.
  • Fractures that occur far more easily than you would expect them to, such as as a result of a minor fall or bumping against a piece of furniture.
  • Loss of height or "shrinking"

If you notice these symptoms in your aging parent, particularly if they already have risk factors for the condition such as being a woman, having a small body frame, or having a family history of the condition, do not hesitate to get in touch with their doctor. Discuss your concerns so that the doctor can give your parent an accurate diagnosis and get them on the course of care, management, and treatment that is right for them. This can include modifying their daily routine, such as with the addition of senior care, to help protect your parent and reduce the risk of serious injury.

Starting senior care for your aging parents can be one of the best decisions that you can make for  them during the course of your caregiver driving. A senior home care services provider can be with your parent on a customized schedule that ensures that they have continued access to the level of care, support, and assistance that is right for them. Through a set of highly personalized services this care provider will help your parent to manage their needs and challenges in the way that is right for them while encouraging them to pursue a lifestyle that is as independent, active, and engaged as possible as they age in place. This care can be particularly beneficial if your senior is suffering health challenges or issues that need support and care, or are focused on reducing their risk factors for other health problems. As their family caregiver, this can give you tremendous peace of mind knowing that your senior has everything that they need both when you are with them and when you are not.
