Simplify Your Schedule to Gain More Time

One of the biggest complaints shared by caregivers is that there never seems to be enough time in the day or the week. You might be surprised to find, though, that you can find some more time in your own schedule just by shifting how you approach scheduling yourself.

Make a List of Your Biggest Priorities Right Now

What’s most important in your life right now? If you’re a caregiver, your senior’s well-being makes the list. You might also include priorities around parenting, around your career, or around being a pet owner. If you own your own company, that might be another priority. Your biggest priorities are where you need to be spending the bulk of your time so it’s important that you know what those are.

For Every Yes, There’s a No

Where something is already occupied, you can’t cram more in. In terms of your schedule, that means for everything you say yes to, there are other things you’re saying no to. This is where it helps to have your list of priorities ready to go. In order to say yes to the activities, tasks, and events that match up with your priorities, you have to say no to the ones that don’t match up.

Combine Like Activities

Whenever you can, try to schedule like activities, tasks, and events around each other. When you’re the one in control of those types of things, it’s a lot easier to do, of course, and you’re not always the one in control. This is basically task batching and it allows you to stay in the same frame of mind for each of those tasks. This prevents you from having to switch up constantly, which ultimately slows you down.

Make Sure Some of Your Time Is Yours

As you’re scheduling, you need to make sure that some of your time belongs only to you. It might be time that you use to reorganize your sock drawer, and that’s fine. You have to do other things besides be on call as a caregiver. Taking time just for you on a regular basis is going to help you to get even clearer about your priorities and about what you want to say yes to. That’s going to help you to simplify your schedule even more.

When you stick to a simple schedule that reflects your priorities and your needs, you’re going to start to realize that you have all the time that you need. It didn’t seem as if you did before because too much of your time was spent on the priorities of other people.
