Changing Your Expectations During the Holidays: Cincinnati Seniors, Caregivers, and Cancer Part 2

Caregiving for Cincinnati Seniors During the Holidays: Not Having Expectations

The first step in making sure that the holidays and special occasions are  enjoyable and not stressful as you are caring for Cincinnati seniors recently diagnosed with cancer is to do research. Getting yourself educated with the diagnosis and the treatments for the diagnosis before the holidays is a great way to alleviate stress later on. If you as the caregiver or loved one are unsure of where to obtain resources to prepare for these occasions, contact your senior’s doctor or medical care providers. Various websites and support groups and organizations are other great resources.

To prepare for the holidays, accompany your Cincinnati senior to their doctor’s appointments prior to the busy season. During these appointments, it would be helpful to bring along a notebook to jot down notes for keeping log of answers to any questions you may have for the doctor. This way, amidst the chaos if you forget a vital piece of information, you have something to look back on. This is a practical way to help keep peace and calm during an already stressful time before the added cancer diagnosis. These questions can be about anything from diet restrictions, to managing side effects to medication, or any other special case instructions that may be necessary during these unique times.

Physical care is a big component of helping to alleviate stress during the holidays. Each person and situation is unique, and will vary from person to person, therefore be prepared help out with different physical tasks when it comes to the different holiday activities, or even the daily tasks such as dressing, cleaning, or cooking. Keep communication lines  open, not shying away from asking questions to alleviate any added stresses.
