Cumming/Gainesville Senior Caregivers: Getting Care for Yourself

Caring for Cumming/Gainesville Caregivers - You are Not Alone

As a caregiver for a Cumming/Gainesville senior suffering from cancer, your personal time is very limited. It is a time consuming job, and you can very easily feel pulled in every direction, everyone needing your attention. The main thing you need to remember is, if you need time alone, take it. Whether it's taking a nap, going for a jog, meditating, or even running errands alone. Whether it be 20 minutes a day or an hour or two a week, carve out time in your schedule for these planned “breaks.” In the long run, taking this time out for yourself is better not just for yourself, but for everyone around you as well. When you take the time to reenergize yourself, the better you can care for your loved ones.

A sense of loss and sadness is a natural and expected emotion for caregivers of loved ones diagnosed with cancer. The holidays and other special days such as birthdays can drum up such feelings of loss and sadness, wishing for days prior to cancer. Anger, confusion, disappointment, and worry are other emotions you may experience as a Cumming/Gainesville senior caregiver. Do not feel ashamed or alarmed, this is normal. There is a lot of pressure to suppress negative emotions and feelings when around family and friends, so when you are alone, all of these reactions may come out.

For your own sanity and healthy emotional well-being, find sanctuary in a trusted close friend or professional and talk about the emotions you are going through. By doing this, you will be able to acknowledge that you are doing the best that you can, the holidays are already stressful before the added stresses of health, and that your loved ones know how much you are doing and love and appreciate you for it.
