Delray Beach Combats Alzheimer's Disease

September 25, 2019

The residents of the greater Delray Beach, Boca Raton, and Boynton Beach area are no strangers to Alzheimer’s Disease, or Dementia; but did you know that September is World Alzheimer’s Month? September 2019 marks the eighth World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign to raise dementia awareness and challenge stigma. World Alzheimer's Month was launched by Alzheimer’s Disease International in 2012; and World Alzheimer's Day is September 21st.

Dementia knows no social, economic or geographical boundaries. Individuals all experience dementia in their own way, but eventually all affected are unable to care for themselves. Seemingly simple tasks, including eating, can become difficult as individuals can have trouble remembering how to swallow. Individuals experiencing symptoms related to dementia all eventually require assistance with their normal activities of daily living. The number of people living with dementia around the world is over 50 million, which is expected to almost double every 20 years, reaching 152 million by 2050 if a cure is not found. Alzheimer’s is one of the most expensive diseases, and is the only of the Top 10 Killers that cannot be cured, slowed, or treated. In fact, dementia is now widely recognized as one of the most significant health crises of the 21st century, and more people feel it is a threat to their retirement than any other disease!
