Chris Miller – Owner
Chris Miller opened BrightStar Care of East Lansing to bring the highest quality of care to families and businesses in Mid-Michigan. His goal is to keep people in their homes longer where they are most comfortable. Chris grew up watching and listening to his mother who was a physical therapist who did home health tell stories about the joy it was to help keep people in their homes longer. His grandparents have had 24/7 home care for 10 plus years which has no doubt helped them live into their late 90’s. Chris graduated with a bachelors degree in Hospitality Business from Michigan State University and a MBA from Northwood University. He has held management positons for the last 11 years in a manufacturing business. Chris is married to Angie with a daughter Lilly and son Blake. It is with this background that Chris strives to grow BrightStar Care of East Lansing to be the leader in Mid-Michigan home care.
Bethany Drown, Branch Manager
Bethany, or Beth, has over 15 years of caregiving and administrative experience in the healthcare industry. She started as a certified nursing assistant and has worked in various departments including HR, scheduling and operations. Her role as the branch manager means that she is responsible for the oversight of operations, payroll & billing, client coordination, performance improvement activities and promoting a professional, fun and caring work environment. Bethany often visits clients and field staff during the week and even after hours to ensure satisfaction from all parties. Bethany does volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, a local animal shelter and is a foster mom for dogs in need. She keeps busy with her fur-babies and plenty of outdoor activities. As one of the “originals”, her dedication to Bright Star is evident!
Deshonda McFadden, Recruitment & Retention Coordinator
Deshonda, or Dee as we know her started with Bright Star Care as a part time caregiver in the field. Her immediate professionalism and can-do attitude was recognized and acknowledge very quickly. She was promoted to a scheduling position, and most recently to the Recruitment and Retention Coordinator. She is in charge of recruiting the top talent for our clients and also for retaining the staff that we currently have. The scheduling team and on-call coordinators turn to Dee for advice, support and assistance. As demanding as her position is, Dee always has a smile and a laugh that is infectious. Her and her husband enjoy fishing, summertime activities and spending time with family. We are proud to have Dee on our team!
Ketia Ellis, Field Specialist, On-Call coordinator, Office Admin Support
Ketia “Tia” came to the Bright Star team as a part time on call coordinator and has grown tremendously within the company. Her quick critical thinking skills and personal approach with the clients and staff have made her a valuable asset in more areas. Tia can be found in the office during the week, as well as out in the field providing training and support. You may hear her voice if you call the office after-hours or on the weekends. She has been given the nickname of the “swiss army knife” for our office. Tia is responsible for the oversight of the scheduling team and jumps in to assist anytime there is a need. Outside of work, Tia is an active wife and mother of 3 children. She is a hairdresser and has aspirations of pursuing that in the future.
Michelle Lerma, Scheduler
Michelle is one of two schedulers that we currently have in the office. She is fairly new to Bright Star in general, but certainly not new to the healthcare industry. She has a lot of experience in the field as a caregiver and support personal. As a scheduler, Michelle is instrumental in placing staff with clients based on a variety of factors. Michelle is someone that you will hear a lot on the phone when you call Bright Star Care. In her free time, she is a busy mom and wife of 3 boys, with another (girl or boy) on the way. She loves naps and playing with her kids. Her family is very important to her!
Amanda Dunlap, Scheduler
Amanda is also fairly new to the Bright Star team. She comes from a long background of caregiving experience and management within an assisted living setting. She is one of the main voices you will hear when you call Bright Star. Her past experience as a supervisor and caregiver have given her the understanding of how to efficiently build relationships with our staff and make scheduling a success. When she is not studying schedules and putting together the big “puzzles”, she enjoys spending time with her 2 children, attending sporting events and traveling with her boyfriend. Don’t let her quiet demeanor fool you! Amanda is as spunky as they come.
Tom Barthel, RN, Director of Nursing
As director of nursing, Tom brings years of experience in hospice and palliative care and geriatric health to the BrightStar team. His dedication to aging in place and desire to empower consumers to direct their own care, guide his leadership of our clinical staff. Maintaining a high standard of care, through staff education and mentorship of caregivers and nurses, gives energy and purpose to his work at our branch. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family and pets, gardening, and roller skating.
Marie Lynn Weiland, Marketing and Business Development Liaison
Directing our community outreach efforts, Marie Lynn champions the cause of excellence in home health care. Her many years of experience in senior health and wellness bring a depth of commitment to her work that invigorates our staff. Her ability to connect and engage our community make her an invaluable team member, allowing us to reach countless new clients in need. Whenever we have an opportunity to connect, whether with a new potential referral source or a family in crisis, Marie Lynn puts her very best foot forward. In her time at home, she enjoys spending time with family and cheering for MSU sporting events.
