Kristen Velez, BSN, RN, CCRN -- Providing RN oversight on every case.
How long have you been a Nurse? I have been a registered nurse for over 14 years. I received my BSN from Texas Christian University in 2004. I have over 13 years of ICU and ER experience and have served as both an Army Nurse and as a civilian nurse. In addition to serving as the BrightStar Care of Flower Mound Director of Nursing, I am also an Army Reservist where I serve as the head nurse of the ICU for the 94th CSH.
What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care®? With over 11 years as an officer in the Army, I bring sound leadership skills and solid judgement skills to the team. I have extensive clinical experience including medical surgical critical care, trauma, emergency medicine, IV skills and medication management, geriatric care, pediatric care and more. I have taught classes to new RNs in neurology and cardiac care. I am certified as a critical care nurse with my CCRN and have ACLS, BLS, and PALS, lifesaving courses for adults and pediatrics. I have extensive knowledge of the Joint Commission process after holding the position of the Stroke Program Coordinator for a Joint Commission certified stroke program.
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about? Meeting and exceeding standards in the care we provide, the documentation we create, and the skill at which we practice are passions of mine. Ensuring that clients and their families feel safe and expertly cared for is of the utmost importance to me as a nurse and as a DON. Also, providing an environment in which our staff is well trained and prepared is very important to me.
I provide A Higher Standard of Care for our BrightStar Care® clients by... Staying aware of the latest evidence based practice and being knowledgeable and prepared. I ensure that I spend the adequate time needed to get to know families and clients and truly understand their personal needs and situations.
