Providing RN oversight on every case from day one
Katherine L. Ross, BSN, RN, MBA
How long have you been a Nurse?
I have been a registered nurse since 1983. I attended the University of Texas at Austin and completed the pre-requisites for my nursing degree. I received by bachelor’s degree in Nursing and my Master’s in Business Administration from Houston Baptist University.
What experience do you bring to BrightStar Care®?
I began my nursing career at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital caring for patient’s in the Open Heart Surgery Recovery Room and Intensive Care Unit caring for children and adults. While completing my Master’s in Business Administration I transitioned to Quality Assurance and Risk Management. For many years I worked in Utilization Management for Memorial Southeast and Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. In 2004 my husband had a motorcycle accident, breaking bones in both legs, his left hand, ribs and vertebrae. Following a two and half week stay at Memorial Hermann the Medical Center we brought him home. His recovery was my first experience with home care and required six months for him to return to work part-time and seven months to return to work full time. Following his recovery I stayed home for a number of years caring for our children, volunteering with the school PTA’s, Band and managing a girl scout troop of 21 girls. My children would say I was a professional volunteer. In 2009 I completed a Nursing Refresher program wanting to brush up on my skills. It had been more than 25 years since I had officially worked at the bedside. I opened BrightStar Care of Friendswood in 2011 as the Owner and Director of Nursing. I have been honored to be there to assist the families in Friendswood and the surrounding areas. Navigating the effects of illness and aging can be incredibly overwhelming. I only wish there had been an agency such as mine when my family was experiencing my husband’s recovery. I am happy to report he is fully recovered though he walks a little funny.
What aspect of your job are you most passionate about?
Many in our healthcare system would say “You are old and there is nothing that can be done.” I take great pride in helping our clients navigate the healthcare system. Being there to interpret what their doctors are saying and helping to translate my client’s needs to the physician. More than once we have been able to improve our client’s quality of life simply by being the translator.
I provide A Higher Standard of Care for our BrightStar Care® clients by...
Being a “Patient Advocate” for our clients.
