BrightStar Care of Honolulu, together with the State of Hawaii Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Labor/Office of Apprenticeship, has created Hawaii’s first Personal and Home Care Aide Registered Apprenticeship Program to help address acute caregiver shortages in the state.

A Registered Apprenticeship is employer-driven training combined with on-the-job learning and related classroom instruction. The program allows the Registered Apprentice to earn a paycheck from day one while learning.

The Personal and Home Care Aide Registered Apprenticeship is a year-long program designed specifically to fill the urgent and growing need for well-trained in-home care professionals in Hawaii.

Alison Lee, Owner and Director of BrightStar Care of Honolulu, said the organization developed the Home and Personal Care Aide Registered Apprenticeship Our Home and Personal Care Aide apprenticeship program is a tremendous opportunity for caring, purpose-driven individuals to master the skills required to work in the home care industry. This is the first Registered Apprenticeship Program in Hawaii in the healthcare sector that is sponsored by a private-sector organization.

Apprenticeship programs in Hawaii have traditionally centered around the construction and tourism industry. Healthcare is a new frontier for apprenticeship and BrightStar Care of Honolulu is proud to be at the forefront. The program is a win for the apprentices, the company, the community and the state.

One of the great benefits of the Personal and Home Care Aide Registered Apprenticeship Program is that apprentices “earn while they learn.” As participants complete portions of their training, their wages increase. We are thrilled to offer such high-quality, home-care specialized training. The training is a hybrid of classroom instruction, independent online coursework, and hands-on field study and practice. The curriculum also includes mentorship training, so our program graduates will have the confidence and training to grow as leaders and to support future apprentices and caregivers.

The senior population is growing and in need of care. Most of Hawaii’s seniors want to age-in-place, but there is a shortage of well-qualified in-home caregivers. The challenge needs to be addressed by government, organizations and the community-at-large. “At BrightStar Care of Honolulu, we pride ourselves on our exceptional, high-quality premium care, and want to be able to extend our services to more of those who need it.” Lee said. “Offering a Registered Apprenticeship focusing specifically on the skills needed to provide excellent personal and home care demonstrates our commitment to this endeavor.”

BrightStar Care of Honolulu is a private duty home care and skilled nursing agency, providing services for those who need assistance at home, or wherever care is needed, throughout Oahu.
