Diane and Her Parents

At BrightStar Care of NV - Henderson, owned by Diane McIntyre, our home care agency provides quality home care, caregivers, and medical staffing solutions to families and businesses in the Clark County area. We offer compassionate care, peace of mind and exceptional service — any time, any place. Hello, my name is Diane McIntyre. I am the owner and administrator for BrightStar Care of Henderson. I have a passion for helping people to maintain their dignity and independence after experiencing my own parents’ challenges. In 2008 my dad retired at the age of 82. He was my mom’s caregiver as she was wheel chair bound for several years. They moved to Henderson to be closer to me. In 2010 it was evident that they needed more assistance than what I was able to offer. We found a fabulous Assisted Living community in our neighborhood. They moved in end of May, and as it happened I was able to secure a position at this community and started working there in the beginning of June. What I didn’t realize was that Papa was in the beginning stages of dementia for at least a year prior to their move. Everything appeared to go well with their move. Papa didn’t have to cook or clean anymore and they were developing good friendships in the community. As I became immersed in the world of senior services I learned about the progression and stages of dementia. It is very common that as people age, they are less likely to go outside and may develop a vitamin D deficiency. Along with the vitamin deficiency, depression can come, and with depression, dementia may take hold. Here is the sad part; in my dad’s case, when we changed his environment, his dementia was escalated.  He could no longer navigate a simple trip to the store; he was forgetting to take his medication and had lost all interest in the supplements that used to cover the kitchen table. After 2 short years of their move, Papa passed. Having gone through the experience of seeing my own parents age, I wanted to provide the highest level of service and empower seniors to maintain as much of their independence as possible in their own home. Change is very difficult for anyone and it is especially so for a senior. I want to provide services in the home with the highest quality of people who are respectful of the senior’s need to be self-reliant and to be supportive to the family member(s) who are typically the current caregiver. As the adult child/grandchild/niece/nephew you should be able to spend your time with your loved one without the concerns of how you are going to manage their personal hygiene or other aspects of daily living.  If you are the spouse, I am much more concerned about your health – Just as it happen with my own dad, far too often I see that the spouse giving care winds up worse off than the one they are caring for and in many cases passing first.  Like the stewardess says – put your own oxygen mask on first.
