BrightStar Care of Howard County is Fighting Germs and Keeping Clients Safe at Home

We all know it is a fact of life that germs are everywhere. Making a home safe and clean is essential to stop bacteria, viruses, mold, and other illnesses

The good news is that many germs aren't going to harm you. Most "germs we interact with at home come from our body, and some foreign invaders can even be beneficial." However, pathogens that can "creep in from the outside" can make us sick.

To get perspective, our Director of Nursing, Andrea Bendig, MSN, BSN, RN, CM, DN, was interviewed on how to keep a home germ-free. Here are a few things Andrea suggests to limit exposures to germs in a home:

  • Wash bath towel after every three uses
  • Wash bedsheets once a week
  • Use mattress and pillow allergy barriers
  • Sanitizes kitchen sponge after every use
  • Let toothbrush air dry in a cabinet
  • Wipe down phones, remotes and handheld devices every few days

Bendig is responsible for providing safety checks and overseeing client care. She will assess cleanliness and client needs and help put the best care practices into place to keep a client's home safe.

Handwashing is the number one way to prevent germs from spreading!

At BrightStar Care, we go to great lengths to adhere to the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals for infection prevention, which includes a thorough hand washing process.

"Our safety standards and practices have received the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission," says Bendig. The Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care and has rigorous standards that go above and beyond state requirements. "This accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to meeting superior performance standards and puts our Howard County BrightStar Care Team within the elite group of less than 10% of in-home health care agencies that have received this accreditation," she adds
