The Effects of the Pandemic on Mental Health

Trauma and the Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Mental Health

We have experienced loss, continuous changes, and complex emotions during this pandemic, impacting our mental health. But there is hope. Find hope and healing in crisis with counseling and mental health support. BrightStar Care can help connect and inform you on ways to heal from trauma, but first, we recommend you recognize the signs of depression.

Depression is more likely to occur when a person has a chronic condition such as diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. Depression can be due to tremendous life changes these conditions can cause, such as limiting mobility or making it a challenge to do things you enjoy.

Symptoms of depression also can be a side effect of certain medications, including those for high blood pressure, stroke, or heart attack. Seniors may be more prone to these side effects because their bodies are less efficient at metabolizing drugs.

Social isolation during the pandemic has also contributed to many people's depression. Family members often tell us that mom or dad "just aren't themselves anymore." Such changes in personality or lifestyle can be signs of depression. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 6.5 million of the 35 million Americans age 65 and older are affected by depression – or nearly 1 in 5.
