Home Care in Hobe Sound FLWhen you choose to have your aging parent continue living in their home with the help of a caregiver or home care aide, you have undoubtedly made the choice that is best for them. If your parent feels most comfortable at home and is happiest at home, living at home can be the best situation for their quality of life and overall health. One drawback your parent may experience when living independently at home, however, is the lack of social interaction. Oftentimes, seniors who lack social interaction can experience feelings of loneliness, isolation, and even depression. For this reason, it is important for you to encourage your aging parent to participate in social activities on a regular basis.

Here are just a few things you can do to help keep your parent’s loneliness at bay:
Plan Frequent Visits or Outings

When you write an event into your schedule, you are more likely to commit to it and do it. Don’t just say that you will come to visit once a week, plan out a day and time in advance so that your parent knows that they can expect you. Similarly, why not plan a weekly/monthly outing? It could be going to a favorite restaurant, going for a walk in the park, or going to the mall. Either way, getting out of the house on a regular basis is a great way for your parent to beat loneliness and isolation.
Suggest a Class

Many community centers and fitness centers have classes that are tailored for seniors. These classes give seniors the opportunity to learn something new, have fun, and meet other people in the process. Encourage your parent to try out an exercise class (which has other health benefits, as well) or take a class in a subject that they’ve always wanted to explore such as art or a foreign language.
Consider Support Groups

If your parent has a chronic medical condition such as diabetes, or arthritis, or has had a particular life experience such as serving in the military or losing a spouse, a support group may be a great way for them to connect with others. Many churches and community centers sponsor support groups which may have meetings once a week, once a month, etc. In a support group, your parent may be able to learn new coping skills, meet others with similar backgrounds, and feel less alone in the situation they are facing.
