Does Your Aging Adult Seriously Hate to Exercise?

Don't Call it "Working Out"

When you refer to exercise as "working out," there's a psychological connection that your senior's brain makes. The term itself brings to mind a lot of effort and work that she may perceive as too difficult for her to do. Referring to exercise as play or by the name of the activity can help to remove that psychological barrier for your senior.

Steer Clear of the Gym

Just being in a gym environment can make your senior want to avoid exercising. If this is the case for her, then do what you can to help her to stay active without having to step into an actual gym. This might mean that fitness classes that feel like going to a gym might also need to be off limits.

Add Nature to the Mix

Being out in nature is restorative, but it can also be a great way to keep your senior moving when she would ordinarily want to quit. Taking nature walks in which you're looking for birds or butterflies can be just the right level of other interactions for your aging adult. Look for other ways that you can include nature and movement together.

Include Distractions Whenever Possible

Perhaps it isn't always feasible for your elderly family member to exercise out in nature, but including other distractions can be really helpful. Having companionship, from friends or elderly care providers, can make a workout pass much more quickly than if she's exercising on her own.

Remember That Nothing Is Permanent

Your senior doesn't have to commit to one type of exercise forever and ever. If she doesn't like one type of activity, then it's time to move on to something else the next time around. It can also be helpful to remind her during workouts that she's only got a few more minutes left and then she's done for the day.

With a little bit of extra effort on both your part and your senior's part, you may be able to make exercise far more interesting for her as she continues to become more active.
