June 5, 2018

June 21st is the longest day of the year. It's also a day when people whose lives are touched in some way by Alzheimer's can raise money to help the fight against Alzheimer's. Across the nation, families, Alzheimer's caregivers, and others who deal with Alzheimer's join to help fight the progressive disease.

Facts About Alzheimer's That You May Not Know

In the U.S., 5.7 million men and women have Alzheimer's disease. In a 15-year span, the number of Alzheimer's-related deaths increased by 123 percent. The National Center for Health Statistics reported that 93,541 people in the U.S. died from Alzheimer's in 2014.

People with Alzheimer's need elderly care services. It's estimated that unpaid caregivers provide over 18 billion hours of elderly care in the U.S. Many of those caregivers are family members, and about two out of three family caregivers are a daughter providing care to a mom or dad.

Family caregivers often have their own financial obligations and children to care for. It's a leading why people providing elderly care to someone with Alzheimer's struggle with stress. Finances, emotions, and physical health are all impacted when you care for someone with Alzheimer's.

Why is Fundraising Important?

In recent months, some of the nation's biggest pharmaceutical company have dropped out of the race to find a cure or new medication for Alzheimer's. Namenda was the last medication to enter the market for helping slow the symptoms of Alzheimer's. Namenda hit the market in 2003, so it's been 15 years without any new medications getting FDA approval.

In January 2018, Pfizer announced they were ending research into finding medications for two forms of dementia – Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Johnson and Johnson dropped trials on a medication it hoped would help Alzheimer's patients. Merck is another company that halted a medication they were testing in 2018.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates donated $50 million from his personal accounts to fund Alzheimer's research. It's a start but much more money is needed. It's estimated that in 2018 Alzheimer's care costs in the U.S. will exceed $270 billion. Finding new, more effective medications or a cure is essential or experts feel the cost will exceed $1 trillion in approximately 30 years.

What Do You Do on The Longest Day?

The Longest Day is all about picking a fundraising method that works for you. Is your house full of items you don't use? Gather your family, friends, and even neighbors and hold a yard sale. Donate the proceeds to Alzheimer's research. Hold a neighborhood BBQ and have people donate to an Alzheimer's organization. Ask local businesses to donate items that can be used in a silent auction where the money goes to Alzheimer's research.

When your parent has Alzheimer's, you need help providing elderly care services. Respite care is important for your mental and physical health. Call an elderly care agency to learn more about respite care and Alzheimer's care services.
