How to Talk to and Help Your Newly Diagnosed Las Vegas Senior

Real Talk: What to Say to Your Las Vegas Senior with Cancer and Other Ways to Love Them

Being a caregiver sometimes means you have authority to help make decisions. When it comes to your Las Vegas senior who was recently diagnosed with cancer, tread lightly. At the appropriate time, you may gently offer up your opinion, but keep in mind that it is your loved one’s body and life, so ultimately it is their decision on how they want to proceed with treatments. Your job as the caregiver to assume roles your senior normally performs. You are also most like the person who will help arrange appointments, drive them to these appointments, and be the foremost emotional  and physical support person. You are the confidant during this hard time, seeing more than most.

One other job you may have as the point person and caregiver is delegating jobs to other loved ones who want to help. Simply relaying to your senior that “so and so” want to help and leave it open ended for your loved one to make a decision, find out specifically how people want to help. This way, your senior who is already feeling overwhelmed, will not feel as though they have more decisions they have to make. For instance, if Susie is a jogger and likes animals, work out a plan for her to walk your loved one’s dog on a regular basis. As a result, there is one less chore for your loved one has to make a decision and worry about, and friends are feeling useful.

Dealing a heavy diagnosis such as cancer is a group effort. Express this sentiment to your Las Vegas senior from the very beginning. Being able to be comfortable in their own skin, be raw and who they want to be, and that they are NEVER alone are always important key points to remind your loved one as they go through different stages of cancer.
