The Randolph YMCA invites the community to attend a special presentation, “Know the Signs of alzheimers-fbAlzheimer’s 101” at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 3. The lecture will include an overview of memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. “The Y is committed to serving the community with health and fitness programs that build strong bodies and minds,” said Bill Lamia, chief executive officer of the Randolph YMCA. “Alzheimer New Jersey’s mission aligns with the Y’s since it provides resources to the community.” The lecture, presented by Laura Hawkins of Alzheimer’s New Jersey, will also cover support resources and planning for the future of someone with the disease. More than 500,000 people in New Jersey are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, according to Alzheimer’s, New Jersey. The organization provides care and support for families and helps to advance research to find a cure. Staying Active Following the Alzheimer’s NJ lecture, Kathrynne Forsbrey, a certified fitness instructor at the Y, will discuss the relationship between exercise and Alzheimer’s delay and prevention. “Many studies have shown that physical activity stimulates mental activity to replace new brain cells; these new brain cells help to slow down or prevent the onset of these debilitating diseases,” Forsbrey said. Forsbrey has developed a curriculum that uses land and aquatics Tai Chi and Yoga to create messaging between the mind and body for the health of the brain through movements that are designed to increase self-awareness and focus. All guests of the lecture will receive a one-day pass to try any of the numerous fitness classes at the Randolph YMCA. The lecture will be held in the program house on the hill at the Randolph YMCA.In addition to lectures and health screenings, quality classes and services are offered at the program house for all ages, without the commitment of a membership. Pre-registration for the free lecture is required. To register, call Alzheimer’s New Jersey at 888-280-6055 or register at the main desk of the Randolph YMCA at 14 Dover Chester Road.
