Finding a Cool Place for Phoenix Seniors

Phoenix Heat Alert for Seniors - Keep’em Cool!

How you can Save Someone's Life in this Heat (It's as Easy as Carrying a Bottle of Water)

It's common for us to become complacent about the extreme heat here, but doctors want you to remember there are real dangers for seniors.

Hot weather is dangerous, and seniors are at risk. Elderly heat stroke and heat exhaustion can be prevented if we all help look out for our seniors. 40% of heat-related fatalities in the U.S. were among people over 65 and we must do what we can to help keep seniors safe in the heat.

There are several reasons for elderly heat vulnerability. People’s ability to notice changes in their body temperature decreases with age. Many seniors also have underlying health conditions that make them less able to adapt to heat. Furthermore, many medicines that seniors take can contribute to dehydration. Fortunately, a few simple precautions are all that’s needed to keep safe.

The scalding temperatures are only going to keep climbing. July 23, 2018 broke the record for a day at 115 degrees in Phoenix, and the National Weather Service warns that July 24 could be the hottest day of 2019. Estimates point to temperatures reaching roughly 117 degrees in metro Phoenix, but climbing as high as 120 in other areas around the state in some weather patterns.

How caretakers can make others say 'We're Cool'
Monsoons are ominous and wreak severe havoc, but extreme heat is a deadly weather phenomenon, claiming 155 lives in Arizona last year. In weather like this, it’s crucial to take hydration, shade and sunscreen seriously, and not just for yourself. The “We’re Cool” campaign offers free locations around metro Phoenix for people to cool off and have a drink of water. You can help this initiative by donating water or money by calling 480-897-1166.
