Caring For The Caregiver

senior care in Reno, NV

Now a days many of us are caregivers of some kind. We possibly are taking care of our spouse, in laws, parents, siblings, clients, neighbors, or even grandchildren. However how can we be the best version of our selves when we are constantly giving of our self?

There is so much to do when taking care of another person. We give of ourselves, mentally, physically, emotionally all day every day. It may come in the form of household cleaning, bathing, dressing, feeding, paying bills, shopping, errands, doctor visits, the list just goes on and on.

Hopefully we are finding consistent support with possibly attending a group support meeting, friends, family, significant others, or respite care. Even having a friend visit while you take a 15-30 minute walk by yourself. We should also be getting plenty of rest!

Here are a few tips to help you during this time in your life:

Let Go

Remember that there are some situations that are beyond your control. Take on what you can and let go of the rest. This truly means not to stress over the things that you have no control over. Do your best and let go, stop fretting over those little things. Is there really anything you can do in that moment?

Stressful Situations

Be present with what is. Before entering into a stressful situation take a moment to ground yourself. Stop, if you can close your eyes, and take a deep belly breath. Open your eyes and see the situation in a clearer light.

Be Flexible

Reminding yourself that any situation can change in an instant. What can you learn from the situation? Try looking at the situation differently. Remember to be kind and loving even in dark situations.

Setting Boundaries

Do what you are comfortable with. If the person is coherent remind them of what the boundaries are between the two of you. Do not let your good nature give in and always doing more than what you are comfortable with.

Mental Health

There are many ways that you can take care of your mental health while being a caregiver. Taking time to meditate, a good conversation with friends, treating yourself to a movie, or signing up for a class that interest you.
