Alzheimer's Disease and Caregiving During COVID-19

November 19, 2020

November Marks National Alzheimer's Awareness Month and Family Caregivers Month in Richmond

BrightStar Care pays tribute to our Richmond dementia caregivers who selflessly care for family members living with Alzheimer's.

At BrightStar Care, we recognize caregiving challenges and celebrate the joys of bringing support and comfort to a loved one who has memory loss. We thank family caregivers for the critical work they do daily to ensure dementia patients can live more safely in their homes and communities.

In all likelihood, dementia does not increase a patient's risk for COVID-19 or the Flu. Still, respiratory illnesses like coronavirus are challenging to explain to someone with Alzheimer's or other dementias. Further, dementia-related behaviors, advanced age, and other health conditions that can accompany dementia may increase risk. For example, people with Alzheimer's disease and all other dementia may forget to wash their hands or take other recommended precautions to prevent the spread of illness. Also, as a result of dementia, illnesses like COVID-19 and the flu may worsen cognitive impairment.

As communities and services begin reopening, caregivers need to consider the risks and take additional safety precautions for people living with dementia. For tips for dementia caregivers at home - PLEASE CLICK HERE.
