BrightStar Care recently celebrated the grand opening of its newest location in Berlin, Maryland, announces Robert Brueckman, president and owner of BrightStar Care locations in Anne Arundel County, Easton and Berlin.

Members of the Berlin and Ocean Pines Chambers of Commerce were on hand to commemorate the occasion with an official ribbon cutting of the new branch, located at 10441 Racetrack Road, Suite 6, in Berlin, which offers services to residents of Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset Counties. Previously located in Salisbury, BrightStar’s Lower Shore branch has been providing services for nearly three years.

BrightStar Care provides home care services, making it possible for people to age in place and recover from illnesses and injuries at home.  The organization specializes in caring for people with complex medical needs – pediatric through geriatric – including Alzheimer’s disease and various dementias, ALS, end-of-life support, paralysis, and many conditions requiring skilled nursing care including IV therapy and wound care.  The BrightStar Care team offers both personal care provided by a home health aide or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and care for complex medical needs provided by a Registered Nurse (RN).

According to Brueckman, BrightStar’s recent move was made to offer a more centrally located hub for its Lower Shore clients and staff. “In the three years that we’ve been operating on the lower Eastern Shore, BrightStar has built a large client base, a group of dedicated staff members and various community partnerships across Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset Counties,” he says. “We believe that our move to Berlin has provided an opportunity for us to be more accessible to the clients we care for, our caregivers and those organizations we partner with to provide care and community education in those areas.”

As referenced by Brueckman, BrightStar is a source for community education through its Senior Solutions Educational Series, a series of educational seminars, focusing on age-related topics ranging from Alzheimer’s and dementia care to home safety tips for seniors. The Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) – a patented program of nonprofit organization Second Wind Dreams® -- is BrightStar’s most-requested training.

The VDT uses patented sensory tools and training based on research conducted by P.K. Beville, M.S., a specialist in geriatrics and founder of Second Wind Dreams®. The VDT makes it possible for participants to experience the physical and mental challenges associated with dementia. This simulation is ideal for professional and family caregivers, health care workers and community members, who have routine interactions with people living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or other cognitive impairments.

BrightStar Care’s regional director of Marketing and Community Outreach, Christina Wingate-Spence, who is also a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP), is one of the organization’s certified facilitators of the VDT and has been offering the training to various health care providers, community agencies and family caregivers across the Eastern Shore and in Anne Arundel and Price George's counties for nearly two years.

“Our team prides itself on the quality care and education we provide our clients and members of our local communities,” says Wingate-Spence. “A great deal of our time is spent on community outreach and education, which we offer to professional and family caregivers so that they will, in turn, offer a higher quality of care and more therapeutic level of engagement to those under their care. Our goal is to assist people in obtaining the necessary tools to age safely and gracefully, in the comfort of wherever they call home, and ultimately achieve their desired quality of life.”
