Salt Lake City Research Shows Senior Alcohol Consumption Is On The Rise

April 25, 2019

April 2019 Is Alcohol Abuse Awareness Month In Salt Lake City

When is One Drink Too Many?

Launched in 2010 by scientists at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® (NDAFW) is a health observance week for Seniors that aim to Shatter The Myths® about drug and alcohol use. But as it turns out, older adults might just benefit from a refresher course on the subject, as research shows they're drinking more than ever.

According to epidemiologists at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), older adults are drinking alcohol more than ever before. The organization's 2017 study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, found that problem drinking is on the rise among older Americans.

In fact, according to the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence (NCADD), some 11% of elderly hospital admissions are due to drug- and alcohol-related issues. In the study, "Prevalence of 12-Month Alcohol Use, High-Risk Drinking, and DSM-IV Alcohol Use Disorder in the United States, 2001-2002 to 2012-2013," researchers at the NIAAA compared data from a national survey of 40,000 adults, taken in 2001 and 2002 and again in 2012 and 2013. They found that drinking had increased in every age group.

Reports show that the number of older adults engaging in “high-risk drinking” increased by 65% over the last two study periods, defining high-risk drinkers as a man consuming five or more standard drinks in a day (each containing 14 grams of alcohol) at least weekly during the past year; and a woman, downing four such drinks in a day or more.
