The Best Hospitals in The San Francisco Bay Area for Seniors and Families

August 15, 2018

UC San Francisco and Stanford University Take Top Spots

Stanford University and UC San Francisco, local academic health centers, take the top two spots on the U.S. News and World Report's annual list of the best hospitals in the Bay Area. They both compete for patients, funding, faculty, and students, and are both doing an excellent job.

UCSF led Stanford with 15 nationally ranked specialties, compared to Stanford’s 12 specialties. Both hospitals ranked in the top five health centers in the state, and earned spots on the U.S. News "Honor Roll," a national listing of 20 hospitals equipped to deal with especially challenging or complex diagnoses.

Reported in the BIZ JOURNAL, “Of the top 10 Bay Area hospitals, all are ranked within the top 50 of the more than 400 health centers in the state and were considered ‘high-performing’ in at least three adult conditions and procedures. The high performing indicator means that the hospital was not nationally ranked, but were ‘significantly better than average’ in a specialty, procedure or condition.”

In the Bay Area healthcare market, most of the top hospitals are associated with larger health systems.  In the top 10 highest ranked hospitals, three are associated with Sutter Health, and two with John Muir Health. All of the hospitals are associated with not-for-profit organizations.

“To rank the hospitals around the country, the publication collected data on 4,656 hospitals, essentially all of the U.S. community inpatient facilities. VA and military hospitals are not included in the rankings. The Best Hospitals list encompasses 25 areas of care that include medical specialties, procedures and conditions.”  Read more facts on hospital rank here:  https://health.usnews.com/health-care/best-hospitals/articles/faq-how-and-why-we-rank-and-rate-hospitals.
