From an early age, I remember mom playing the upright piano in our living room. She filled the house with Broadway show tunes, old folk songs and Christmas carols. I have great memories of family sing-alongs as the fireplace roared and the holiday lights twinkled. Now mom has Alzheimer’s disease, and she has forgotten many things. As the disease progresses, she can’t remember how to make coffee or brush her teeth -- and sometimes she doesn’t know her own name or who I am. To help keep her safe and comfortable at home, I engaged Alzheimer’s care in Denver. With help from BrightStar Care West Denver, I have peace of mind knowing that she’ll be in good hands each and every day.
Alzheimer’s has robbed my mother of many things, including family memories and her love of the piano. Did you know that five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s today? In our state, 67,000 Coloradoans are living with Alzheimer’s, and rates are project to jump 37% to 92,000 by 2025.
Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and nearly $1 of every $5 in Medicare funds is spent on people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. By 2050 that is projected to be $1 of every $3.
We’re doing something to help.
More than 10,000 people are expected to join the Denver Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Saturday, Sept. 17. This is just one in a network of Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado Walks across the state to raise funds for the association’s programs to provide education, care and support for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers -- and to fund research to address the deadliest disease without a prevention, treatment or cure.
Registration for the Denver Walk to End Alzheimer’s will start at 7 a.m. at Denver City Park, and the opening ceremony will commence at 9 a.m.
More than 10,000 participated in the Walk last year, and this year the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado is working to exceed that total – allowing them to continue to provide, at no cost, essential services to those with Alzheimer’s and their families.
In support of this community effort, BrightStar Care, your source for home care in Denver, is also participating. Join us, won’t you?
