There are many reasons older adults can have sleep problems, including anxiety, a sleep disorder, or health conditions that make sleep difficult. If your aging relative has trouble sleeping, research shows that a weighted blanket might offer some relief.

Weighted Blanket Basics

A weighted blanket is a blanket that have a special lining that makes them weigh more than the average blanket. The materials used to make the blankets heavy varies by manufacturer, but plastic pellets are commonly used.

The blankets weigh anywhere from 4 to 30 pounds. Usually, manufacturers recommend purchasing a blanket that weighs about 10 percent of the individual’s body weight. So, if your aging relative weighs 140 pounds, you want to look for a blanket that is around 14 pounds.

Weighted Blanket Research

The idea behind weighted blankets is that they feel a bit like getting a long, warm hug. They are supposed to make the user feel calm and secure. Although there hasn’t been much scientific research conducted concerning the blankets, early research indicates they may actually help people to sleep better.

A study conducted in Sweden involved 31 people with insomnia. Some used weighted blankets for two weeks. At the end of the study, those who used the blankets said they slept better and didn’t move around as much.

Experts believe that weighted blankets work because they provide deep pressure stimulation. According to WebMD, “deep pressure stimulation has been found to calm adults and children with anxiety, autism, and attention difficulties.”

Another theory is that the pressure of the blanket helps the body to release melatonin. Melatonin is a kind of hormone that encourages sleep and is involved in the regulation of the sleep cycle.

Good Sleep Habits

Of course, simply using a weighted blanket won’t be enough to solve all the senior’s sleep problems. It’s also important to establish good sleep habits, such as:
  • Using the bedroom only for sleeping.
  • Keeping the temperature of the room comfortable for sleeping.
  • Adjusting the lighting of the room and closing curtains or blinds.
  • Turning off electronics.
  • Going to bed at the same time each night.

A senior care provider can help your aging relative to practice good sleep habits. A senior care provider can move any items out of the bedroom that may cause distraction and wakefulness, such as a television or computer. A senior care provider can also help to keep the room clean and clutter free so that it is relaxing. Senior care can also help the older adult to change to quiet, relaxing activities close to bedtime, such as listening to music or reading.
