Today, we recognize the strength and resilience of those living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We're proud to share that our Director of Nursing, Daisy, played a crucial role in helping her uncle receive a proper MS diagnosis—highlighting the compassion and dedication she brings to every patient interaction.
In October of 2007, a series of tragedies turned a simple visit from my Tio Caco, into an extended stay. Over the weeks that my uncle was staying with us, he started complaining of strange symptoms. “Daisy, it’s so weird, today some of my fingers feel numb. Sometimes it creeps up my arm!” I sat and thought about it for a while and finally I told him, “Tio. It sounds like you have MS.” He turned to me and said, “you know, your mom (also a nurse) said the same thing!”
Alarm bells went off in my head and I raced to talk to my mom. We compared his reports, came to the same conclusion and started making calls. The first was to a neurologist friend who agreed to see him and then ordered a STAT MRI. I remember audibly gasping when the results came in and I saw his images for the first time. There were lesions everywhere. He was immediately diagnosed with Stage 2 MS and began treatment.
Turns out, he had been having symptoms for a while, but always the protector, he was focused on his family and not himself. After some intense treatments, his symptoms settled and he began finding his new normal.
Now, nearly 18 years later, my uncle still enjoys his life to the fullest. He spends time traveling to see his daughters and grandchildren, fishing, and camping. If you or your loved one are experiencing numbness or tingling in your arms or legs often, call your doctor and schedule a check up. Quality of life is possible with MS, but it requires early detection, consistent monitoring, and continued treatment.
Together, we raise awareness and support for the MS community. 💙 #WorldMSDay #BrightStarCare #MSAwareness
