Milwaukee’s Historical Celebration of St. Patrick’s Day

March 15, 2024
Milwaukee has been celebrating St. Patrick’s Day since 1843, even predating Wisconsin’s statehood. As a city, Milwaukee celebrates the holiday every year with their annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. The parade honors the city’s Irish heritage and the unique Irish American experience within the community.

Many Irish natives immigrated to the United States around 1845 which led to nearly 15 percent of Milwaukee’s residents were ethnically Irish by 1850. Today, 8 percent of metro Milwaukeeans are of Irish ancestry. (Encyclopedia of Milwaukee, 2016)

Not only is Milwaukee proud to celebrate Irish culture on St. Patrick’s Day, but the city also hosts Irish Fest every summer, notably the largest festival of Irish culture in the world.
