If you or a loved one is recovering from a fall, surgery, or a hospital stay, getting back to normal can feel overwhelming, especially when leaving the house is hard. That’s why BrightStar Care of Gloucester County is excited to announce that we now provide in-home Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) services to help seniors regain strength, mobility, and confidence right where they live.

We’re local, we move quickly, and we coordinate closely with your physician and care team so you can focus on recovery and staying independent.

What is Physical Therapy (PT)?

Physical Therapy focuses on helping people move better and feel steadier on their feet. For seniors, PT is often the key to improving walking, balance, endurance, and strength after:

  • A fall or close call
  • Joint replacements (hip, knee, shoulder)
  • Hospitalization or rehab discharge
  • Deconditioning from illness
  • Neurologic conditions (stroke, Parkinson’s, neuropathy)

In plain terms: PT helps you get stronger and safer with the goal of reducing fall risk and improving mobility.

What PT looks like at home

A PT may work on:

  • Safe walking and gait training (with or without a cane/walker)
  • Balance training to prevent falls
  • Strengthening for legs, core, and posture
  • Stair training and transfers (bed, chair, toilet, shower)
  • Pain management strategies and gentle mobility work
  • A home exercise program that’s realistic and easy to follow

What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?

Occupational Therapy helps people do the everyday tasks that make independent living possible. OT is less about “exercise” and more about function. Think dressing, bathing, cooking, and safely moving around the home.

OT is especially helpful after:

  • A fall or injury
  • A stroke or neurologic change
  • A surgery that affects function (hip, knee, shoulder)
  • Worsening arthritis or weakness
  • Vision or coordination changes

In plain terms: OT helps you keep doing the activities of daily life safely and with less strain.

What OT looks like at home

An OT may help with:

  • Bathing and shower safety (setup, routines, and fall prevention)
  • Dressing strategies and adaptive techniques
  • Kitchen safety and meal prep modifications
  • Energy conservation (how to do more without getting wiped out)
  • Home safety recommendations (grab bars, shower chairs, raised toilet seats)
  • Fine motor skills for buttons, zippers, writing, and daily tasks
  • Caregiver training so family members can help safely

Why in-home therapy matters for seniors

For many older adults, therapy works best when it happens in the real environment where daily life takes place. In-home PT and OT can help:

  • Prevent repeat falls and ER visits
  • Improve confidence with walking and movement
  • Support safer bathing, toileting, and transfers
  • Reduce caregiver stress by teaching safer techniques
  • Make “aging in place” more realistic and sustainable

This is especially important after hospitalization or rehab, when many seniors decline quickly if therapy and support aren’t consistent.

How therapy fits with home care

Therapy and home care work extremely well together. If you already have an aide or companion support (or need it), we can coordinate services so the plan is consistent from day to day. Therapy builds the skills and strength. Home care helps reinforce safe routines and supports daily needs while recovery is underway.

Who can benefit right now?

You don’t need to be “severely” limited to benefit from PT or OT. If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth a conversation:

  • “I’m unsteady and worried about falling.”
  • “I’m slower than I used to be after my hospital stay.”
  • “Stairs are getting harder.”
  • “Bathing feels risky.”
  • “I’m not bouncing back after surgery.”
  • “I’m exhausted doing basic tasks.”
