Personal Care Options for VA-Enrolled Veterans in Camden, Gloucester, and Salem Counties

At BrightStar Care of Gloucester County, we’re proud to support the brave men and women who have served our country. If you or a loved one is enrolled in VA healthcare and lives in Camden, Gloucester, or Salem County, there are several programs that can provide personal care services right here in our South Jersey community.

Here’s a breakdown of the personal care options available for VA-enrolled veterans:

1. Homemaker/Home Health Aide (H/HHA) Program

Through the VA’s Homemaker/Home Health Aide Program, veterans can receive assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and light housekeeping. Care is provided by VA-contracted agencies like ours.

To access this service, veterans need a referral from their VA primary care provider. Many veterans qualify with no out-of-pocket costs, especially those with a service-connected disability.

2. Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC)

For veterans who have serious, chronic health conditions and difficulty traveling to medical appointments, the VA offers Home-Based Primary Care. This program brings a full medical team — including nurses and aides — into the veteran’s home, and can include personal care support.

Eligibility is determined by the veteran’s VA primary care team.

3. Veteran-Directed Care (VDC)

Veteran-Directed Care gives veterans the flexibility to hire their own caregivers, including family members, friends, or trusted community providers. Veterans manage a personal care budget with guidance from the VA.

This option is available in parts of South Jersey, and your VA social worker can help determine if you qualify.

4. Community Care Network (CCN) Personal Care

If the local VA cannot provide services quickly enough, veterans may qualify to receive personal care from community-based agencies through the Community Care Network (CCN).

BrightStar Care of Gloucester County is proud to be a CCN provider serving Camden, Gloucester, and Salem counties. A referral from your VA provider is required.

5. Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits

For veterans who are already receiving a VA pension, Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits can provide extra monthly income. These funds can be used to pay privately for personal care services at home.

Applications for these benefits are handled through the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA).

6. Respite Care

Family caregivers can sometimes feel overwhelmed. The VA offers respite care services to give family members a break, providing temporary personal care support at home.

Respite services are limited by annual hour caps, and a referral through the veteran’s VA provider is needed.

7. Skilled Home Health Care Services (SHHC)

If a veteran has skilled medical needs, the VA can authorize Skilled Home Health Care, which may also include personal care delivered by a certified home health aide.

Your VA doctor or case manager can help arrange for these services.

How to Get Started

If you or a loved one is enrolled in VA healthcare and needs personal care in Camden, Gloucester, or Salem County, the first step is to talk to your VA primary care provider or social worker. They can assess your needs and submit the appropriate referrals.
