Honoring Alzheimer’s Awareness Month: Supporting Our Community on Long Island’s North Shore

Each September, we pause to spotlight Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care — a cause deeply relevant to many families in Nassau County and across Long Island. At BrightStar Care – North Shore Nassau County, we believe that awareness, education, and compassionate community support are essential to helping families navigate this journey with dignity, respect, and hope.

Why Alzheimer’s Awareness Matters

Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t just affect memory — it impacts quality of life, relationships, and daily routines. Early diagnosis, thoughtful planning, and a network of support can dramatically improve outcomes for both the person living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Awareness also helps reduce stigma and encourages people to seek help sooner.

In our service area (Woodbury, Port Washington, Great Neck, Manhasset, Glen Cove, Oyster Bay, Roslyn, Sea Cliff, and nearby communities) the need is real. Families often prefer to keep loved ones in the comfort of their homes as long as safely possible, and that’s where in-home memory care support becomes critical.

How BrightStar Care Supports Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care Locally

At BrightStar Care – North Shore Nassau County, memory care is one of our core in-home services. Here are some ways we specialize in caring for clients with Alzheimer’s or dementia:

  • Person-centered care plans: Every individual is unique. We tailor care to the person’s history, preferences, and stage of disease progression.

  • Registered Nurse oversight: Our care plans are regularly reviewed and adjusted under RN supervision to adapt to changing needs.

  • Companionship & cognitive engagement: Beyond basic care, we incorporate memory-stimulating activities, social connection, and emotional support.

  • Respite for caregivers: We offer breaks for family caregivers, giving them time to rest, recharge, or handle other responsibilities — a vital part of sustaining long-term care.

  • Collaboration with local resources: We partner with Alzheimer’s and dementia support organizations throughout Nassau County to ensure access to group programs, education, and community services.

You’re never alone in this journey — we strive to be a caring partner, helping families stay together while maintaining safety, comfort, and peace of mind.

Tips for Families and Caregivers

  • Learn the early warning signs: Difficulty with driving, misplacing items, repeating questions, withdrawal from social activities — and consult a physician early if you observe them.

  • Plan ahead: Legal, financial, and medical planning early in the diagnosis can reduce stress down the road.

  • Stay socially & cognitively active: Simple puzzle games, music therapy, gentle exercise, and meaningful conversations can give quality-of-life benefits.

  • Self-care for caregivers: Join support groups, take occasional breaks, and accept help from your community — even a few hours of relief can help.

  • Communicate with empathy: Speak slowly, use short sentences, validate feelings, and use nonverbal cues (smiles, touch) — all of which go a long way.
