Elder abuse includes physical, sexual, emotional, and financial abuse, as well as neglect or abandonment of individuals aged 60 or older. Referrals come from hospitals, neighbors, and other concerned individuals.
Referral Statistics:
- 2024: 957 referrals (446 required follow-up; 123 for financial exploitation)
- 2023: 869 referrals
- 2022: Approximately 600 referrals
Role of APS Workers:
APS staff assist vulnerable older adults and those with disabilities. They conduct welfare checks, investigate abuse, connect individuals to resources, and help with guardianships and protective placements. Four APS workers are based in the ADRC (Aging and Disability Resource Center) and collaborate with various professionals and agencies.
Warning Signs of Elder Abuse:
- Unexplained financial changes
- Injuries or signs of neglect
- Isolation or mood/behavior changes
Reporting:
Suspected abuse should be reported to the ADRC at 877-886-2372 or to local law enforcement.
