How Veterans Can Qualify for Free Home Care Hours Through the VA
At BrightStar Care of Westfield and Summit, we’re proud to serve those who have served our country. Many veterans are not aware that they may qualify for free in-home care hours through the Veterans Administration (VA) — including services such as personal care, companionship, homemaker assistance, and respite care for family caregivers. If you or a loved one is a veteran, here’s a simple step-by-step guide on how to qualify for VA home care services.

Who Is Eligible for VA Home Care?
To receive home care services through the Veterans Administration:
  • You must be enrolled in VA healthcare
  • You must have been honorably discharged
  • You do not need to be a wartime veteran to qualify
If you meet these basic requirements, you can begin the process of getting approved for in-home care hours.

Step 1: Schedule a Physician’s Assessment
Start by contacting your local VA Medical Clinic to request an assessment.
VA Medical Clinic – Lyons, New Jersey
151 Knollcroft Road, Lyons, NJ
(908) 647-0180

When calling, request:
  • “In-Home Respite Care”
  • “Homemaker/Home Health Aide Services”
A VA Physician will complete an assessment to determine your needs and write an order for services.
Note: Your VA physician will not replace your current primary care doctor unless you choose for them to.
Before the visit ends, you can also request a specific In-Home Provider, such as BrightStar Care of Westfield and Summit, to handle your services in Union County.

Step 2: A VA Community Coordinator Will Contact You
After your assessment, a VA Community Coordinator will reach out to discuss the results and let you know how many hours per week of home care you qualify for. If you did not name a preferred provider, the Coordinator will give you a list of local in-home care options. They will then send your information to the provider you select.  To reach the Community Coordinator directly, call (908) 647-0180.

Step 3: Your In-Home Care Provider Begins Services
Once your information is received, your chosen in-home care provider — such as BrightStar Care of Westfield and Summit — will contact you to:
  • Schedule an in-home assessment
  • Develop a personalized care plan
  • Arrange for a qualified caregiver to begin services
Care is typically provided for the number of hours approved by the VA, and can include support with daily activities, companionship, meal prep, light housekeeping, and more.
