Rick Lijana, Owner/President Rick, born and raised in the Detroit, MI area, graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. During his 30+ year manufacturing career, he was allowed the opportunity to travel around the world many times over. It is always great to have friends throughout the world and to gain some firsthand experience into the various cultures around the world. Rick’s passion for home care was grown out of two personal experiences. First was the care for his mother whom suffers from Dementia and COPD. The first caregiver service provided was a disaster in that her life was threatened due to poor care. Valuable lessons were learned. The second event was a sequence of health events in Ricks life which gave him a unique understanding of both the physical and mental aspects of the healing process. Rick has been married for more than 30 years to his lovely wife Myndi, and has two beautiful daughters, Veronica and Valerie. Both daughters are RN’s and work in the office with Rick.

She has always had a passion for education which is just one way she delivers on her passion to support and give to others. She left education to start her own retail business which was located on the square in Crown Point. When her husband decided to open BrightStar of Valparaiso, she closed her store to come on board as the Branch Manager with him. She spends the rest of her time in church activities, RV-ing and enjoying her wonderful granddaughter.
Valerie Lijana, Director of Nursing Valerie was born in Louisville Kentucky and graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. She worked as a nurse extern for 1 year at Methodist Hospital Southlake in Merrillville Indiana while in nursing school. After receiving her degree, she worked as an RN at Methodist Hospital Southlake on a neurology IMCU/ICU unit for four years. She also worked as an RN on an orthopedic/oncology unit at St Anthony Hospital in Crown Point. During her tenure as an RN, Valerie became concerned with the patient’s difficulty of transition from in-hospital care to their home setting. She saw, first hand, the complications patients faced when forced to care for themselves at home. She also witnessed multiple hospital re-admissions due to this gap in care. It was this concern that inspired Valerie to open a home care facility with her family. Valerie states, “People are unaware of the complexities of care in the first few weeks following discharge from the hospital. Also the current healthcare system does not take into account a patient’s strong desire for independence. By delivering home care, I can help the patient during this transition from the hospital to the home bringing patients and family’s peace of mind. Also, care in the home retains their sense of pride and independence which is so vital to any patient.” Valerie is close with her family and feels family is one of the most important aspects in her life. She has one sister who shares the director of nursing position at BrightStar. She has a niece who she is close with and spends her free time with. She considers her niece her little princess!
