Senior Care in Hobe Sound FL

Senior Care in Hobe Sound FLDid you know that nearly 35% of adults who are over the age of 40 have experienced some type of vestibular dysfunction? Vestibular dysfunction is a result of damage to the vestibular system which includes some parts of the inner ear and brain that control balance and eye movements. Vestibular dysfunction can result from disorders such as Meniere’s disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and vestibular migraines as well as complications from allergies or autoimmune disorders. Often, these conditions can cause chronic dizziness and balance problems, leading to a decreased quality of life for many seniors, not to mention a higher risk for falls. September 12-18 is observed as Balance Awareness Week to spread awareness about vestibular disorders and dysfunction. Since it is normal to experience dizziness from time to time, many seniors may write off their symptoms and not bring them up to a doctor. However, vestibular disorders can impair your loved one’s quality of life, put them at risk for falls, and prevent them from doing activities they enjoy so it is important for your loved one to talk about their balance and dizziness problems with their doctor. Do you suspect your loved one is suffering from a vestibular disorder? Read on for more information about the symptoms of vestibular disorders and the treatments that are available.
What are the symptoms of vestibular disorders? If your loved one is suffering from a vestibular disorder, they may experience chronic dizziness, vertigo, and lightheadedness. This can lead them to feeling off-balance, as though they are constantly rocking, or as though their world is spinning. In addition, they may lose their balance and have difficulty walking straight. They may also appear “clumsy” or unstable, especially when walking in crowds. Vestibular disorders can also cause vision or hearing problems such as weakened depth perception, difficulty focusing, tinnitus, and sensitivity to loud sounds.
How are vestibular disorders treated? Fortunately, there are many different treatments available for vestibular disorders. They include vestibular rehabilitation therapy (or VRT) which uses exercises to retrain the brain and vestibular system, physical therapy, occupational therapy, diet changes, talk therapy, medication, and surgery (usually as a last resort). In addition, there are many changes and modifications that caregivers can help their senior loved ones make at home that can make living with a vestibular disorder easier. These include encouraging regular exercise, preparing healthy foods, making sure the home is properly lit, and installing grab bars for balance in the bathroom.
