Senior Dehydration & Dementia Care During Boston Heat Waves: FAQs

Published On
June 23, 2025

With a heat wave impacting the Boston area, it's critical to protect our elderly loved ones—especially those living with dementia—from dehydration. At BrightStar Care of Acton, Andover & Lowell, we’re here to help families stay informed and prepared.

Why are seniors more vulnerable to dehydration?

As people age, they may lose their sense of thirst, take medications that cause fluid loss, and have reduced kidney function. All of this increases dehydration risk—especially during hot weather.

How does dementia make dehydration worse?

Seniors with dementia may forget to drink water or struggle to communicate that they’re thirsty. Caregivers need to monitor fluid intake regularly and watch for warning signs.

What are key signs of dehydration?

  • Dry mouth

  • Confusion or irritability

  • Weakness or dizziness

  • Dark urine or low urination

How can caregivers help during a heat wave?

  • Offer fluids frequently

  • Keep rooms cool

  • Encourage hydrating snacks

  • Avoid outdoor activity during peak heat

Our caregivers are trained to help with all of this and more.
