The theme for this year’s awareness campaign is “Change Your Mind.” In our view, there couldn’t be a more appropriate focus. By inviting people to change their minds about brain injury, we can work together to put an end to the stigmas attached to brain injury and empower individuals living with brain injury to reach the highest level of independence. Here are a few facts about brain injury from BIAA that you should know:
- Every 9 seconds, someone in the United States sustains a brain injury.
- More than 3.5 million children and adults sustain an ABI (Acquired Brain Injury) every year.
- At least 2.5 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (trauma to the brain from an external force) every year.
- One of every 60 people in the U.S. lives with a traumatic brain injury related disability.
