June is PTSD Awareness Month. It’s a time to raise awareness and remind those affected that help and support are available.
While PTSD can impact anyone who has experienced trauma, it is often associated with the brave men and women who have served our country. For many veterans, the experiences of military service (especially combat) can increase the risk of developing PTSD. It’s important to remember: PTSD is NOT a sign of weakness. PTSD is a human response to trauma.
Understanding PTSD
PTSD can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms may begin shortly after - or even months or years later - and can come and go over time. [ptsd.va.gov]
Common symptoms may include:
- Flashbacks or nightmares
- Avoidance of reminders
- Feeling anxious or on edge
- Changes in mood, sleep, or relationships
Treatment and Support
The most important message: PTSD is treatable, and recovery is possible.
Evidence-based therapies - such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and EMDR - can help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. [mentalhealth.va.gov]
Veterans also have access to a range of support through the VA, including:
- Individual and group therapy
- Family counseling
- Specialized PTSD treatment programs [va.gov]
Understanding and utilizing VA benefits can be a critical first step toward healing and support.
Tools That Can Help
Navigating resources is overwhelming but there are tools to help.
