Caregivers Encourage The Use of Music

Music is a universal language that triggers emotions even when you may not expect it to. The sound of a familiar tune may send your feet tapping, your body dancing, and memories returning. In-home caregivers observe that music frequently uncovers buried riches in the brain of dementia or Alzheimer’s patients. However, music therapy should not be restricted to this older demographic. The therapy has been proved to lessen and eliminate pain for patients suffering from both acute and chronic pain.

Caregivers love to invite seniors who have opted to age in place to partake in musical events. Although your parent may like attending a concert or even exercising their vocals through singing, if they are housebound, there are services that may come to them or transport them to these activities. Music is also being employed with physical and occupational therapy programs, where data revealed that seniors tend to perform better and recover quicker.

Your parent may find it difficult to interact with you and your family and friends in the same way as they did in the past. However, music frequently initiates a discussion that will bring life back into an environment that is more comfortable for them. Caregivers may not have all the explanations as to why this works, but they have witnessed the aged react, if for a fraction of a song or two. The music inspires toe-tapping, hand clapping as well as a recollection of the words or a time in their life that is associated to that song.

Caregivers note that music has even prompted talks when mom or dad may ordinarily not do much more than a grunt or sigh. Using the sounds of yesterday to break through and enrich your parent’s life is a natural pastime to share and enjoy together.
