Chest Pain? Don’t Guess—Know the Difference
Chest discomfort can be scary. Sometimes it’s just heartburn after a spicy meal, but other times it could be a heart attack—and knowing the difference can save a life.
Heartburn vs. Heart Attack: Key Differences
Heartburn:
- Burning in the chest after eating
- Sour taste in the mouth
- Worse when lying down
- Usually relieved by antacids
Heart Attack:
- Pressure, squeezing, or tightness in the chest
- Pain that spreads to the arms, neck, jaw, or back
- Shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness
- May occur during activity or rest
If you're ever unsure—call 911 immediately. It’s better to be safe.
Know Your Risk Factors
You're more at risk for a heart attack if you:
- Have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
- Smoke or live a sedentary lifestyle
- Have a family history of heart disease
- Are over the age of 55
Women & Seniors: Watch for Subtle Signs
Heart attacks in women and older adults can look different—nausea, fatigue, or general weakness may be the only symptoms. Don’t ignore these signs.
